How to Rock the Coding Interview – Tips That Helped Me Land Job Offers from Companies

Coding interviews is certainly no easy feat and from what I have experienced you will go through a lot of screening processes before you land the job. Make sure to bring your A-game to the table.

Hence, we are going to discuss Uber interview questions and Facebook coding interview questions in general and I'll also be throwing light on the questions I was asked. Try to focus more on the pattern rather than the question itself because they will definitely vary from one interview to another.

Here in this blog, I’ll share some of the most helpful tips and tricks that have been my trusty companion in cracking interviews with big tech companies such as Amazon.

Learn the job description

Having a clear idea about the job profile that you will be applying for is most important as it helps in sorting out the topics on which you will be focusing the most. On a basic level, all beginner programmers must be acquainted with Data structures and Algorithms.

If you know the basics of this topic you will be able to design efficient programs and applications which will be able to support a huge number of users at a single time without any lag.

On the other hand, knowing a bit about Linux operating systems and its functioning will definitely add a feather to your cap in case you are applying for an IT support or DevOps job profile.

This is one of the most commonly used operating systems by nearly all the big tech companies so you will surely be considered first if you have this skill on your resume.

Learn about the company

One thing that I have caught up on from most of my interviews with either the big tech or the small scale companies is that they will definitely throw in a question or two regarding their own company just to test your knowledge.

This should be a no-brainer but, if you do not have prior knowledge or basic knowledge about the company you will be applying to then you are certainly not fit for the job. There are chances that you may come off as negligent or rude.

Learning about the company allows you to answer the classic interview question- “What made you choose your corporation?” or “Why our company?”. And while we are on the subject please have an answer to these questions beforehand to make a good first impression. This helped me during my interview with Amazon and Facebook.

Brush up on your programming knowledge

JavaScript, HTML, and CSS are the basic programming languages that you must have a hold on if you are applying to high-profile companies such as Amazon, Facebook, or Uber for the position of software developer or programmer.

There are various online resources that are available for brushing up on your knowledge and learning how to come up with solutions to a given stressful work environment. From what I have experienced we were also asked questions related to Multithreading and Concurrency. These are basically advanced functions which display your ability to create fascinating applications with as little lag and bugs as possible.

It is not necessary that you will have to know it all but knowing about a few of these definitely adds to your profile and will speed up the process of your selection.

Work on your communication skills

Not only is it important to know what you are talking about but, it is also important to present yourself in a manner that makes the listener (in this case the interviewers) take notice of your conversation.

Don’t get me wrong they are definitely there to listen to you in order to hand you the job but since there will be many more like you who will also be applying for this job it is important to leave a mark.

I was focused on the question “Why should they hire me?” and “What do I bring to the table?” even before entering the interview and being asked these questions in real life. This gave me an enthusiastic mindset and I was able to present the same to the people sitting in the big chairs.

So if you are someone who struggles with communications issues, try to recreate an interview scenario with people whom you feel comfortable with. Get as many pointers from them as you can because you are certainly going to get nervous no matter how prepared or confident you are.

Maintain a presentable body posture

This is another way of communicating psychologically that you are confident in your environment and you mean business. Maintaining a presentable and confident body posture is something that we do subconsciously and in a stressful environment such as an interview, this might skip our minds.

But if you are here to deliver your facts and answers with a vibe of seriousness and authority then slouching on your seat and crossing your hands before your chest to cover your body are not the right moves.

Sit politely and try to not cross your legs and your hands while having a conversation because subconsciously they make us come off as a timid or reserved person. What they say about your first impression being your last impression is somewhat true when it comes to interviewing scenarios.

What you can do is use hand gestures while explaining a concept as often as possible and if you are not an animated talker in general you can simply place your hands on the sides of your seat and be seated in an upright yet comfortable position. Know more....
